The grant will be used to cover expenses for a selected site to host a symposium on careers and opportunities related to world languages for all Mobile County world language teachers and approx 700 of their students. Will feature reps from 4 areas to discuss opportunities and incentives available in their fields to successful world language students. Areas are:1) Local Business (public and private enterprises such as port, aeronautics, tourism, etc)); 2) Military and Federal (FBI,Border Patrol,diplomatic corps,etc); 3)Humanitarian Peace Corps, Red Cross, etc); and 4) Academic (college/universities that offer BOTH an overseas study program AND teacher-training for future teachers of world languages).
Budget Details *
Our preliminary contacts with Univ of South Ala Mitchell Ctr, City of Mobile Civic Center, City of Mobile Convention Center, and Ft. Whiting Auditorium indicate that the requested grant will be less than one fourth to one third of what is needed to rent the selected site. These funds would be used to reduce that budget element. Students will still pay approx $10 each to cover transportation and substitute teachers from the 11 schools with World Language programs. We will also require students to bring a bag lunch and a drink.
